Santo Antão
In this island we have two very contrasted zones, the North part is the greenest and mountainous, the south is the driest.
These remarkable differences can be very well observed during the journey that is done from the port of Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande, the city on the other side of the island. We will start on the level of the sea from the dry and warm zone. We will brave the climatic contrasts if we found fog in the highest zones. The temperature quickly goes down and the cold is palpable. In the route we will arrive at Cova Crater, an inactive volcano worthy to observe from the crests of its ring a tectonic collapse. The global vision of the crater and its depth made an impression to us, with its cultures in its bottom. They are of various tonalities and colours. The trip to access the other side of the island is very spectacular. Santo Antão has many possibilities as far as activities. We have different routes for Trekking with strong slopes or more easy ones. We can also make Canyoning, even for children or for those already experienced. Or if someone simply prefer to walk on the inside of a deep gorge without any difficulty and between extremely narrow walls. Footpaths will bring us at the end of valleys with cascades from 50 to 250 meters with water the all year. Excursions in minibus or boat on the all island. The Climbing is also possible.
For the people whom like the sea and the fishing, it is possible to dive and to fish along the coasts. There are lost and solitary beaches. We also enjoy natural swimming pools in its platforms.
There is several main cities in the North East part of the island, Ponta do Sol, Paúl and Ribeira Grande. In the last one we will find the post office, the bank, the pharmacy, the hospital, Internet and the TACV office. In Ponta do Sol we have a fishermen port, the post office and Internet, numerous hotels, pensions, restaurants and stores.
